About Our Coalition

We’re building a fair pretrial system for all Minnesotans, regardless of race, wealth, or where we live. Learn who we are and join the fight to transform Minnesota’s pretrial system.

Our Vision for Pretrial Justice

We are working to transform Minnesota’s money-based pretrial practices and create a transparent and accountable pretrial system that:

  • Advances community safety and uses data — not arbitrary cash amounts — to make decisions about pretrial release and detention.
  • Eliminates racial and wealth-based disparities in pretrial detention.
  • Results in pretrial release for people who pose no risk to the community, who are the vast majority of people awaiting trial.
  • Prioritizes support and accountability for defendants during the pretrial process.
  • Honors survivors and victims of harm, connects them to resources, and restores their dignity and agency.

We are a community-led, research-driven movement.

Our coalition brings together community organizations, survivors, legal experts, researchers, and justice-impacted Minnesotans. Together, we translate research into actionable policy reform.

We are committed to collaboration and accountability.

We work in good faith and hold each other accountable. Conflict is natural, and we address it through restorative practice. We build durable partnerships because systemic transformation takes time and trust.

We have a unified message for lawmakers and the public.

We believe in “one band, one sound.” Members coordinate to ensure partners, the public, and policymakers hear a clear, consistent message from our coalition.

We share a vision for lasting impact.

Pretrial Justice Minnesota is not a short-term campaign — it’s a long-term effort to end the criminalization of poverty and create a pretrial system that values accountability, freedom, and fairness for all.
